A/V Geeks
A/V Geeks
The A/V Geeks Film Archive is an ephemeral film collection curated by Skip Elsheimer. What started as a hobby more than ten years is now a lifetime commitment. His collection has grown to over 20,000 films gathered from school auctions, thrift stores, closets and dumpsters. He presents themed film shows in his home base of Raleigh, North Carolina and he's taken his shows on the road across the United States. Films from Skip's archive have been released on DVDs. For more information about A/V Geeks upcoming shows, the DVDs, stock footage inquiries and donating to the collection, visit http://www.avgeeks.com. Skip is happy to be able share these selected films from his collection online - giving them a life beyond their intended purpose as little cultural time capsules of our immediate past. Enjoy! What is an "A/V Geek?" Short for "audiovisual geek." The semi-derogatory term used to describe the kid who was allowed to operate the film projector in school. Such were considered to be "teacher's pets," but were often allowed to avoid classwork and freely roam the school halls eventually ending up at the library to get the projector and films.

Vintage Educational Films
Vintage Educational Films
This collection features vintage educational films from a variety of sources. Films intended for educational purposes are an enormous, often neglected part of the twentieth century media landscape. Archived here are corporate and government sponsored films; classroom academic films instructing students in science and the humanities, and classroom guidance films on sex education, manners, and morality; military training films; medical films aimed at the public or at health practitioners; religious conversion films; and a host of others, too many to fully enumerate. Educational films were shown to audiences of all ages, though they were typically produced with a specific age group and instructional purpose in mind. Many were accompanied by study or discussion guides used to facilitate post-screening discussions. They were viewed in an array of contexts, most often in schools and universities, churches, libraries, museums, social clubs, and the military. Taken collectively, these materials played a key role in shaping the citizenry of a generation. Our purpose in collecting these films on the Internet Archive is to allow increased access to an important part of twentieth century film history.

We record their global struggles and provide analysis of their efforts to empower themselves and transform society to provide greater democratic, human, social, political and economic rights. Each program consists of feature stories, generally interviews, within a historical context, often accompanied by sound from demonstrations, rallies or conferences, and complemented and enhanced by poetry and instrumental or vocal -- people's culture.

Speed Runs
Speed Runs
Speed running (trying to complete a videogame in the fastest time possible) is almost as old as gaming itself. At least, it's almost as old as games that have a definite end point or staging points, since speedrunning a game with infinitely repeating levels is Sisyphean. This collection hosts downloadable movie files documenting the swiftest possible way to complete videogames such as Quake, Metroid, Zelda and many others. The videos come from Speed Demos Archive, TASvideos, and other sources. Unless specifically noted as an 'emulated' run, all speed runs are done on the original game hardware, using only the normal save points available to a player.

The Cylinder Archive - Collection Site
The Cylinder Archive - Collection Site
The cylinder recordings available here are an online project started in 1998 by Norman Bruderhofer, a phonograph collector and audio preservationist from Berlin. Dedicated to the invention and development of the phonograph, the Cylinder Archive serves as a detailed source of information for hobbyists. One component of Bruderhofer's project is a monthly release of a new cylinder recording. The releases are produced by carefully filtering electronic transfers from the original cylinder recording. Altogether, these recordings provide a syllabus of recorded sound that ranges roughly from the 1890s to the 1920s. The easiest and most entertaining way to learn about the heritage of recorded music is to tap the primary sources themselves, the original recordings, which provide an open time window that was kept closed for a century. For more information on the Cylinder Archive, go to http://www.cylinder.de/.

Let's Play
Let's Play
Let's Play is a collection of videogame playthroughs with commentary (either text or audio). Let's Play videos show the videogame being played while the player talks about what he is doing in real time commentary (sometimes just with text). Generally the playthroughs are spread over several segments of play (varying in time). Rarely some action is done "off screen" or speeded up to not get too repetitive, but in most cases the playthrough is a complete run of the game including all "Game Overs" and deaths. The videos are usually a humorous way to learn about a videogame without having to play it. For a more informal description and list of other Let's Play resources, see TV Tropes. This collection is currently contributed from the Let's Play Archive. This mainly focuses on the Something Awful Let's Play! forum. If you have any contributions to make to this collection please contact Simon Carless, the Internet Archive's curator attached to this project, at simon@archive.org

Square Dances Without Calls
Square Dances Without Calls
Square dances without calls is instrumental music that was made for square dancing. During the square dance boom of the 1950s many musicians were mobilized to form bands and record who would not have been recorded otherwise. Most of these were made when records were still in the 78 rpm format. This collection of recordings can be used for square, round, and contra dancing. Many of them came with call sheets, or cue sheets containing the intended dance instructions. In some cases a vocally prompted version was also made. If you are a musician, you can listen and learn from these files. If you are a dance facilitator, you can practice with them. If you are a dancer, you can dance to them. The easy access of this format allows you to quickly sample to find something you like.

"Conversations about Gambling" has been broadcast on WUFO 1080 AM, from Buffalo, NY, 12:30-1:00 pm, every Monday since April 4, 2010. Its purpose is to educate and inform the community, and to encourage conversation on the subject of gambling, which has often been ignored, misunderstood, or blindly accepted - despite its increasing impact on the economic and social health of our communities. Our website, conversationsaboutgambling.org, provides basic information and links to related websites. We have interviewed guests with experience and/or expertise in a number of areas. They have included: Judge Mark Farrell (founder of Gambling Treatment Court), Robert Schulman (a pediatrician who has worked with teen gambling problems), Sandra Adell (professor of African-American Studies, U. of WI/Madison, author of CONFESSIONS OF A SLOT MACHINE QUEEN: A MEMOIR) James David Audlin (Distant Eagle) and Doug George Kanentiio (Native American opponents of casino gambling), Les Bernal and Tom Grey (officers of the national anti-gambling organization, Stop Predatory Gambling) Joel Rose and Mary Bartley (current and former co-Chairs of CACGEC) Charlotte Wellins (educator and gambling recovery expert) A number of recovering compulsive gamblers and family members, participants in GA and Gam-Anon, who discuss their experiences with addiction and recovery. We have also had some strictly call-in programs, and have received a number of calls from community members, with various concerns about gambling.

Television Series: Bit för Bit (Bit by Bit)
Television Series: Bit för Bit (Bit by Bit)
Bit för Bit (Bit by Bit) was a Swedish TV-series about computers. Six episodes were broadcasted in 1989 as part of the youth segment called Unga Tvåan on Sveriges Television (SVT). It was a mixture of education and entertainment, where each episode had competitions in games and demos, and usually an educational clip and examples of CGI-animation. There was a slightly confused hostess (Gila Bergqvist) and an animated co-host called Orcon. Orcon would slightly change his voice, personality and role in between the episodes. John Minson was a British journalist who did exclusive reports from the UK. The last episode was hosted by Jan Trolin. Bit för Bit was the first, if not only, TV-show that brought the demoscene into the public eye on a frequent basis. They displayed demos as backdrop to the hostess, showing unedited scrolltexts with greetings, fuckings and so on. Each episode showed a collage of Amiga demos, supposedly sent in by the demo groups, and in the following episode a winner was announced. The winner was selected by a jury. Several famous demoscene groups appeared: Fairlight, Rebels, Defjam, Kefrens, Phenomena, Byterapers, etc. In E01 and E02 the vertical synchronization was off, so the demos were displayed wrong. The end credits was a part from a Phenomena megademo, with the song Let's Party by Firefox. Every episode had a gaming competition called "teledataspelet." The games played were GeeBee Air Rally, California Games, Paperboy and RVF Honda. They were played using the phone as a joystick. The beeps of the phone accompanied the sound of the game, and the commentry of the hostess. There were examples of CGI-animation in most episodes. Just like the demos and games they were badly credited but they were made by, for example, John Lasseter and Jeff Minter.
